2. The airport map

   The key areas: check-in, security check, boarding gates, apron (where the aircraft park), control tower, crew room, immigration and quarantine, customs inspection, baggage claim, and arrivals hall. Naming them in English is essential to communicate with other aviation professionals.

   A flight involves many professionals: the captain and first officer on the flight deck, the ground crew and ramp agents who load and service the aircraft, the caterers who supply the meals, the check-in and gate agents, maintenance engineers, security officers — and, of course, the cabin crew connecting them all with the passengers.

   Anya Bukowski

   Anya had friends from university who worked for airlines and loved their jobs, so she wanted to work for an airline too. She started in reservations, then moved to ground operations — baggage, ticketing, gate check-in, and ramp. The next natural step was to fly: she got an interview, and the job.

   The best part, she says, is travelling and the flexibility. The greatest challenge: living a normal life with working hours that aren't normal — nights, holidays, jet lag. Her tips: always travel with something to do, keep a snack in your bag in case you don't get a meal, pack workout clothes for the layover, stay in touch with family and friends, and sleep when you can — even if it's not your normal sleeping hours.
