    Cabin crew responsibilities include: securing the cabin for take-off and landing, making announcements, operating the doors, looking after passengers' comfort, accounting for the money, taking care of the paperwork, and reporting to the cabin service director.

    The profession has a history: the first cabin attendants of the 1920s were men — stewards who came from ships and grand hotels. In 1930 Ellen Church, a nurse, became the first female flight attendant, and airlines began hiring nurses for the role. Over the decades the job changed with the aircraft: bigger jets, international routes, modern safety training — until today's profession, where safety expertise matters far more than glamour.

  7. What makes a good flight attendant?

    Airlines prefer to hire cheerful people who show a lot of empathy. You no longer need to be young and glamorous — you need to be skilled and professional, because you are the 'face' of the airline. Cabin crew must also have excellent health, clear speech, good vision, be tall enough to reach the emergency equipment in the overhead lockers, and be good team workers.

    Las aerolíneas prefieren contratar gente alegre y con mucha empatía. Ya no hace falta ser joven y glamuroso — hace falta ser cualificado y profesional, porque eres la 'cara' de la aerolínea.
